Tess Durbeyfield is a young girl from a small farm located in Marlott. Her father, Jack Durbeyfield, finds out that they are long lost descendants of the ancient and wealthy d’Urbervilles. Tess’ mother wants her to visit the prestigious d’Urberville Estate to claim kin. When Tess arrives at the mansion, she is greeted by Alec d’Urberville, a middle-aged man. He takes advantage of Tess sexually. He makes her life miserable. She returns home and decides to travel to find a job. She goes to a milking farm called Talbothays Dairy. There, she encounters a young man named Angel Clare. After a couple months, Angel asks Tess to marry him. They get married on December 31st, and Tess decides to tell Angel of her past with Alec. Once he hears this, he leaves her in disgust, to go to Brazil to find new farm land. He leaves her with some money to pay for food and shelter. Alec d’Urberville returns into her life after she sees him preaching at a church. He asks for her forgiveness and asks if she wants to marry him. She declines by telling him that she is already married. Tess’ life spirals downward again, when she finds out that her father died. Alec decides to take care of Tess, but when Angel returns, she doesn’t want anything to do with Alec anymore. She murders Alec and runs away with Angel to find a safe haven. They stay at a empty mansion and finally reach Stonehenge and stay there for another night. Morning arrives and 16 police men come to take her away to put her to death for the murder of Alec. Before she leaves, she asks Angel to take care of her sister for her. She is later hung, and Angel fulfills her wish.
